The Board of Healthcare Funders (BHF) is thrilled to announce the winners of the 10th Annual Titanium Awards, revealed at the 24th Annual BHF Conference Gala Banquet held on May 12, at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. The Titanium Awards continue to be a benchmark for excellence in the healthcare sector, recognising individuals, organisations, and initiatives that demonstrate outstanding contributions to the healthcare industry.
This year’s Titanium Awards introduced new categories and saw a diverse range of exceptional entries. The awards are designed to spotlight the incredible efforts being made across healthcare to improve patient outcomes, access, quality of care, and to drive innovation. In particular, the new Best Innovator in Healthcare category showcased how creative ideas and transformative solutions are helping to shape the future of the sector.
2025 Titanium Awards Winners:
- Titanium Award for Excellence in Creating Access to Quality Healthcare
Winner: Gift of the Givers
Gift of the Givers (GOTG) has played a pivotal role in revitalising Southern African healthcare, transitioning from COVID-19 response to long-term systemic impact. They focus on restoring healthcare infrastructure, reducing surgical backlogs, expanding specialist care and delivering primary health services to underserved communities. With
over R10 million invested in medical equipment, GOTG supports hospitals and clinics across provinces. Their programmes, including the Careline mental health helpline and Mina Cup campaign, highlight their holistic approach to healthcare access. Through strategic partnerships, GOTG continues to bridge access gaps and contribute to the attainment of universal health coverage (UHC)in South Africa and the broader region.
- Titanium Award for Best Integrated Report: Health Funders/Medical Schemes
Winner: Government Employees Medical Scheme (GEMS)
As South Africa’s largest restricted medical scheme, GEMS provides affordable and equitable healthcare for over 2.3 million public sector employees. Through its Annual Integrated Report, GEMS demonstrates its strategic innovation, financial stewardship, and commitment to member well-being. The report showcases the scheme’s transparency and efforts to enhance healthcare access. GEMS continues to prioritize financial stability and healthcare quality for its members, setting a high standard in integrated reporting.
- Dr Clarence Mini Titanium Award for Young Achiever
Winner: Dr Sandile Kubheka
Recognised as the youngest doctor in South Africa when he graduated from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2013, at the age of 20 years old, Dr Sandile Kubheka received the award for his exceptional leadership in public health. As one of the country’s top physicians, he has made significant contributions to improving healthcare delivery and mentoring future healthcare professionals. His dedication to public health advocacy sets a benchmark for young professionals in the healthcare sector.
- Titanium Award for Service to Membership: Open, Closed & Self-administered Medical Schemes, Administrators, and Managed Care Organisations
Winners: Bestmed Medical Scheme and Bonitas Medical Fund
Winning the award under Category A: Best Service, Bestmed Medical Scheme is recognised for its efficient claims processing and low complaint rates, ensuring a seamless experience for members. The scheme has earned a place among the top three in member satisfaction, ranking highly in surveys such as Ask Afrika and News24.
Bonitas Medical Fund won under Category B: Operational Excellence, demonstrating strong financial performance, including a reserve ratio of 41.5%. Despite challenges, Bonitas saw growth in membership and kept premium increases low while focusing on quality care and data-driven decision-making.
- Best Innovator in Healthcare
Winner: Momentum Health Solutions
Momentum Multiply is a breakthrough wellness rewards programme offered by Momentum Health Solutions that combines health, behaviour, and financial incentives. It empowers individuals to manage their wellbeing proactively while lowering claims and improving health outcomes. The programme uses AI-driven insights and real-time financial rewards to promote healthier living. Momentum Multiply helps create a sustainable healthcare system by managing demand and preventing illness, ultimately reshaping the economics of healthcare.
