Dr Musa Gumede

Dr Musa Gumede is a seasoned occupational practitioner and medical health system expert with over 35 years’ experience in the healthcare profession. He holds several qualifications: a PhD in Health Sciences (Durban University of Technology), Master of Management Sciences (Durban University of Tehcnology), MBChB (University of Natal) and other undergraduate qualifications.
Before joining the CMS, Dr Gumede served as eThekwini’s Deputy City Manager (Community and Emergency Services), a post he has held since 2020. From 2005 until 2009, Dr Gumede was in the employ of Momentum Medical Schemes serving in various capacities, first as Head of Provider Networks and later as Head of Low-Income Market- Health Risk Management.
He is also no stranger to public health service. Between 2017 – 2019, he led the KZN Health Department as Deputy Director General (Specialised Services and Clinical Support) followed by an acting stint as HOD KZN Health.
His notable leadership transcends government, private sector and civil society. A founding member of the South African Medical Association (SAMA), Dr Gumede occupied chairmanship roles at Highway Hospice, Progressive Professionals Network in KZN, SAMA KZN Coastal Branch, and EThembeni Lutheran Church. He was also President and Vice President of University of Natal Medical School SRC.
Dr Gumede currently serves as Chief Executive and Registrar of CMS.
