Dr Martin Mpe

Dr Martin T. Mpe is a South African cardiologist, healthcare leader, and President of the South African Heart Association. With more than two decades of experience spanning clinical practice, academic engagement, and healthcare leadership, he is committed to advancing equitable cardiovascular care in South Africa and across the African continent.
He obtained his MBChB from the Medical University of Southern Africa, followed by a Fellowship of the College of Physicians of South Africa and a Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine. He then specialised in Cardiology at the University of Pretoria and furthered his training internationally as a research fellow at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium.
Dr Mpe has held key leadership roles across the public and private healthcare sectors, including Head of Cardiac Services at 1 Military Hospital and service in the Presidential Medical Unit. He currently practises as a cardiologist in Pretoria while contributing to the development of public-sector services, training, and complex cardiac care.
A recognised leader in professional organisations, he has served as President of the Heart Failure Society of South Africa and the Southern African Hypertension Society, and currently serves as President of the South African Heart Association. His work focuses on strengthening healthcare systems, developing policies, and advancing universal health coverage.
He is actively involved in academic teaching, mentorship, and the examination of cardiologists, and serves on the editorial board of the Cardiovascular Journal of Africa.
