Professor Partha Kar

Professor Partha Kar serves as the National Specialty Advisor for Diabetes with NHS England and is a co-author of the national Diabetes GIRFT report. Since 2008, he has been a consultant in diabetes and endocrinology at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, where he developed the Super Six Diabetes Model, recognised as a prime example of integrated care.

In addition to his contributions to diabetes care, Professor Kar has played a pivotal role in obesity management by participating in the formulation of national strategies to combat obesity, advocating for policies that promote healthier lifestyles and enhancing patient outcomes through comprehensive weight management programmes. He has also focused on implementing innovative approaches to treat and prevent obesity, including interdisciplinary collaboration, research on effective interventions and public education campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of healthy living.

He has also made significant advances in technology for type 1 diabetes management, including flash glucose monitoring and continuous glucose monitoring during pregnancy, and developing online digital self-management platforms. He led efforts to collect real-world data on Closed Loops for NICE review and collaborated with NICE to update guidelines on non-invasive glucose monitoring access for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

His initiatives encompass integrating frailty into QoF treatment targets, piloting diabulimia projects within the NHS, championing the Language Matters campaign, and improving diabetes care in primary care networks. His recent projects focus on transitional care models and addressing inequalities in technology access, based on socioeconomic status and ethnicity.

Beyond his work in diabetes, he addresses racial disparities in the medical workforce as the Medical Workforce Race Equality Standard Lead for NHS England. He was recognised as one of the most influential BAME individuals in healthcare in 2020, 2021 and 2022.
