Christopher Watney
Christopher Watney BA (Hons) DIPM FCIM is a senior executive with an extensive background in health, life and property & casualty insurance gained working for brands such as Southern Cross, AXA, Direct Line and Churchill Insurance. Prior to developing his insurance career, Christopher spent time in senior roles in the energy and technology sectors. Now chief executive of International Federation of Health Plans (iFHP) , Christopher is responsible for helping private health funds self-organise to enable the creation of business value, solve common challenges and support the growth and mobilisation of talent.
Prior to joining the International Federation of Health Plans in 2020, Christopher spent nearly six years as chief marketing officer at Southern Cross Health Society, New Zealand’s largest health insurance business. Latterly he also served on the board of Osteoporosis New Zealand, later Bone Health NZ.
Now based in London, UK, Christopher spends much of his time in his role as CEO of iFHP with health plan leaders around the world, helping build better business models for a more sustainable future for the funding of human health

Dr Katlego Mothudi
Dr Katlego Mothudi is the Managing Director of the Board of Healthcare Funders (BHF), an industry representative body for medical aid schemes, administrators, and managed care providers. The BHF has a presence in eight countries across Southern Africa, including Lesotho, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and Botswana. Dr Mothudi is responsible for providing leadership and strategic direction for the organisation, and for driving the organisation’s growth.
Dr Mothudi has previously served as a Medical Advisor and Clinical Executive for Metropolitan Health Group, was the Managing Director for Aid for AIDS within the AfroCentric Health stable, before becoming the Executive Head of Clinical Services and Operations at Sizwe Medical Fund. He has held various other roles in the healthcare industry, including working as a Medical Officer in the South African Public Healthcare Sector and later as the Clinical Manager of a District Hospital.
Dr Mothudi is an advocate for ethical leadership and serves on several boards and various industry committees. These include the Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority (HWSETA), the Health Sector Anti-Corruption Forum and Steering Committee which were set up by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU).
Dr Mothudi holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Applied Chemistry, an MBChB degree from MEDUNSA, and training in Sports Medicine. The latter gave him the opportunity to work with various sports organisations and teams, culminating as the Chief Medical Officer for the Referees’ Headquarters during the 2009 FIFA Confederation and the 2010 World Cups

Dr Lungi Nyathi
Dr Lungi Nyathi is a senior and versatile leader in healthcare and passionate about building sustainable and caring health systems in Africa. She is currently the CEO of Alignd, one of the few companies that offer value-based care solutions for complex health problems. Their leading, novel product is palliative care in the oncology setting. She has over a decade in managed care experience, her previous role being an Executive Director at Medscheme and AfroCentric Health. She oversaw the actuarial, advanced analytics, hospital negotiations, health provider networks and disease risk management, Aid for AIDS—managing the financial and clinical risk of 15 health funders with her teams. She has served on several Boards in the healthcare space, including boards of a public health care hospital, several managed care organisations and the Board of Health Funders (an association of health funders in Sub-Saharan Africa). Lungi served as workstream lead for workplace vaccination programmes in South Africa during the COVID19 pandemic, as part of Business4South Africa’s collaboration with the National Department of Health

Dr Magome Masike
Dr Magome Masike is the Registrar of the Health Professions Council of South
Africa.
Dr Masike is well-known in the medical industry, as he was previously a Member of Executive Council (MEC) for Health in the North-West province from 2010 to 2018. His achievements as a leader in the healthcare industry includes his leading role in the amalgamation of Tshepong and Klerksdorp public hospitals. He holds an MBChB and a Masters in Business Administration (MBA). He is currently a candidate for a Doctor of Philosophy in Public Health. Dr Masike is not new to leadership roles. He was the Chairperson of the North-West Parks Board and the Executive Mayor of the Matlosana Local Municipality from 2000 to 2004.

Dr Michael Mol
Michael didn’t go for career counselling, which might explain why he’s a medical doctor, an executive film & TV series producer, a renowned presenter, a health tech entrepreneur (co-founder of Hello Doctor), a global speaker, consultant, author and most recently CEO of TruthTV. A trauma doctor turned TV presenter, Michael traded the emergency room for the small screen and co-anchored Top Billing for over a decade, scooping up several critically acclaimed awards along the way.
He then melded his passion for medicine and media and produced two TV series: “Hello Doctor” and “The Dr. Mol Show.” Watched by over a million people weekly, the show not only edutained its audience on health and wellbeing but was part of a bigger vision to give every South African access to personal, affordable, and quality healthcare through immediate access to doctors via their mobile phones. That vision became a reality with “HelloDoctor” – SA’s first mobile digital tele-health company, giving everyone access to a doctor, anytime, anywhere, on any phone, in any South African language.
After exiting HelloDoctor he launched a new venture called TruthTV – South Africa’s first subscription video-on-demand service focusing exclusively on Faith and Family entertainment with a vision to rekindle wholesome societal values – all the while stoking his passion for digital health and health education.
Michael is currently focussing on Medicine 3.0 and HealthSpan with a view to giving his patients an extra ten good years of life.

Dr Nono Ledwaba-Mweli
Dr Nono Ledwaba-Mweli – MBChB, PGDip Occupational Medicine, MSc in Health Economics Dr Nono Ledwaba-Mweli, MBChB, PGDip Occupational Medicine, MSc in Health Economics, serves as the Medical Director at Universal Healthcare, where she provides clinical oversight, guides financial performance, and drives strategic initiatives across a range of healthcare schemes. Since joining in 2022, her focus has been on regulatory compliance, clinical risk management, and cost savings for clients.
Dr Nono’s career began in the South African public health sector, where she gained invaluable public sector and healthcare experience at Helen Joseph Hospital, Natalspruit Hospital, Sebokeng Hospital, and Johannesburg Hospital (2001 – 2005).
Drawing on her extensive experience in managed care, Dr Nono previously served as General Manager: Strategic Managed Care at Universal Healthcare. Her earlier roles include that of Senior Manager: Clinical Advisor at SANLAM/CAMAF, and positions at Medscheme and Alexander Forbes Health, where she focused on provider relations and medical advisory services.
Dr Nono’s academic credentials include an MSc in Health Economics from the University of South Wales, a Postgraduate Diploma in Occupational Medicine and Health from the University of Pretoria, and an MBChB from MEDUNSA (now Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University).

Dr Pali Lehohla
Dr Pali Lehohla is a former board member of the Institute of Economic Justice at Wits University. He is a Professor of Practice at the University of Johannesburg. He is the former Statistician-General of South Africa, a position he held from 2000 up to 2017. He is a former Chair of the United Nations Statistical Commission. He was the founding chair of the Statistics Commission of Africa (StatCom Africa) and chaired the African Symposium for Statistical Development (ASSD). He was the Vice President of the International Statistics Institute (ISI). He served as one of the twenty-five-member panel on Data Revolution appointed by the UN Secretary General. He is a Research Associate at Oxford University and Consultant at Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI). He is a founder of the Pan African Institute of Evidence

Dr Penny Mkalipe
Dr Penny Mkalipe is the Chief Medical Officer at Eskom Holdings SOC. She is based at Eskom’s Head Office, Megawatt Park, Sunninghill, Johannesburg. She has over 3 decades of medical expertise as a General Practitioner, an Occupational Health Medical Practitioner, and a Senior Manager in Human Capital (Human Resources) Division, responsible for the delivery of Occupational Health and Wellness services to Eskom employees. In 2016, she was appointed as an Assigned Employment Equity (EE) manager and assisted Eskom in implementing its Diversity, Equity, inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) strategy and program. Dr Penny Mkalipe is currently appointed by the National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) as the Responsible-Appointed Medical Practitioner (R-AMP) for Koeberg Power Station, playing an assurance role for the implementation of the medical surveillance program associated with radiation in the workplace. She has held various roles as a Non-Executive Board member for the Eskom Foundation, Health Science Academy (HSA), South African Employers for Disability (SAE4D) and is a medical panel member and expert of the sub-committee of the Eskom Provident Pension Fund responsible for adjudicating on applications for medical disability benefits (medical boarding). During her tenure as a leader in her various roles, Eskom received various accolades and awards for its HIV/AIDS workplace program from the Global Business Coalition against HIV/AIDS (GBC) and First-runner-up award for its workplace diversity program from the Department of Labour (DoL), amongst others. In Dr Penny Mkalipe was awarded as the Leader and Executive of the Year in 2023 for her role in assisting Eskom to manage the risks posed by the COVID 19 pandemic. She is a personable, hands-on leader, key strategic advisor displaying outstanding management and interpersonal skills, in-depth business acumen, able to engage with various stakeholders and contribute to organizational efficiencies.

Dr Pontosho B. Mokoena
Dr. Pontsho B. Mokoena is a South African Chief Risk and Insurance Officer and Academic Researcher who specialises in the fields of applied mathematics and data analytics. She holds a Doctoral Degree in Business Administration specialising in Predictive Risk Management as well as a Master’s Degree in Actuarial Science among other qualifications. She has more recently completed an Artificial Intelligence Course with Oxford University, Said Business School.
She has 20 years corporate experience across different industries occupying senior leadership and board roles in the specialised fields of enterprise risk management, short term and long-term insurance, employee benefits, healthcare, investment advisory and analytical modelling.
In her current role at Barloworld Group as the Executive: Risk & Insurance, she is responsible for spearheading the enterprise risk and insurance functions alongside managing the benefits for the Group as the Principal Officer of the Group’s Medical Scheme Barmed as well as the Principal Officer of the Group’s Retirement Fund.

Dr Rajesh Patel
Dr Rajesh Patel is registered with the HPCSA as a Specialist Family Physician with 37 years’ experience in the health sector.
Dr Patel is the Head of the Health System Strengthening Department at the BHF. He advises the body on health policy, medical scheme benefits, healthcare quality and affordability. His career includes working as a GP/family physician for seven years, from 1988 to 1995. After leaving private practice he joined the medical aid industry.
His roles in the medical scheme sector include having served as a medical advisor, scheme manager, and in clinical risk management. Prior to joining the BHF in 2005 Dr Patel spent two and a half years in the pharmaceutical industry. His special interests are quality assurance, value-based medicine, and application of public health principles in health risk management in the private sector.
He was a member of the ministerial Health Data Advisory and Co-ordinating Committee (HDACC), and was appointed as a Commissioner to the Lancet National Commission (SA). He was a nonexecutive director of the Council for Health Service Accreditation of Southern Africa (COHSASA) and Health Quality Assessment (HQA), as well as a former Chairperson of the Clinical Review Committee of HQA.

Dr Randall Hartnick

Dr Simon Strachan
Dr. Simon Strachan is a practicing paediatrician based in Bedfordview. Since 1996, he has been practicing at Life Bedford Gardens Hospital, offering comprehensive paediatric care with special interests in vaccinology, pulmonology, allergy, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
He has publications in international Journals, authored a chapter in the paediatric text book “Child health for All” on and has been an invited speaker at both local and international conferences. Simon is the co-author of “Feeding Sense” published by Metz Press, and this is in its 2nd edition. Simon is an examiner for the CMSA FCPaed II, a lecturer on the MSc Vaccinology at Wits and an APLS Instructor.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Strachan serves as the CEO of the South African Private Practitioners Forum (SAPPF), representing over 4,500 specialist private practitioners nationwide. Under his leadership, the SAPPF actively engages in healthcare policy discussions, striving to improve the quality and accessibility of healthcare services in South Africa.
Dr. Strachan is also a steering committee member of the Universal Healthcare Access Coalition (UHAC), a collective of healthcare professionals and organizations advocating for practical solutions to achieve universal health coverage in South Africa.
Throughout his career, Dr. Strachan has demonstrated a profound commitment to paediatric healthcare and health system reform, contributing to both clinical excellence and policy development to enhance healthcare delivery in South Africa. Simon believes that the private sector is integral to the successful achievement of universal access to healthcare for all South Africans. He is married and has lots of children and grandchildren.

Dr Themba Hadebe
Dr Themba Hadebe is a dynamic medical doctor and healthcare executive with over 15 years of experience across both the public and private health sectors in South Africa. He currently serves as the Clinical Executive at Bonitas Medical Fund, which is South Africa’s second-largest open medical scheme, where he leads the strategic oversight of the clinical and managed care portfolio. In this role, he plays a crucial part in driving innovative care models, optimising clinical outcomes, and enhancing healthcare value for the scheme’s members.
Dr Hadebe is currently a board member of the Board of Healthcare Funders (BHF) and serves on its Governance and Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Committees.
Dr Hadebe is a registered occupational health practitioner with a passion for systems-thinking approaches that link health outcomes to workforce productivity and national development. Throughout his career, he has held senior clinical leadership roles and has championed integrated workplace health and wellness programmes across various industries. He bases his approach on value-based healthcare and person-centred care delivery, which guarantees measurable impact and sustainability.
A graduate of Stellenbosch University’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Dr Hadebe’s academic journey reflects a profound commitment to leadership and excellence in healthcare. He holds an Executive Development Programme qualification from Wits Business School, a qualification in Healthcare Strategy from Harvard Business School and a postgraduate diploma in Occupational Health from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Dr Tumi Mahlangu
Dr. Tumi Mahlangu is a dentist by profession, with postgraduate qualifications in Interceptive Orthodontics and Forensic Dentistry, with Golden Key Honours. A recent graduate of Stellenbosch Business School, Dr.Mahlangu has been recognised as a Top Student in the September 2024 MDP programme.
Dr.Mahlangu has worked as talk show host and radio DJ, and has served in both the public and private sectors as a dental practitioner. She is a former lecturer at the Central University of Technology, and assisted with the establishment of the CUT Dental Assisting Clinic. She currently serves as a Dental Advisor at Dental Information Systems (DENIS), with a passion for healthcare, mentorship, and civic duty.

Dr. Vuyo Gqola
Dr Vuyo Gqola is an accomplished healthcare executive and a registered Medical Practitioner with extensive experience in clinical practice, managed care, and healthcare leadership. She currently serves as the Chief Operations Officer (COO) of GEMS, where she plays a pivotal role in overseeing the Scheme’s strategic operations, ensuring efficiency, sustainability, and the continued delivery of high-quality healthcare services to members. Before assuming the role of COO, Dr Gqola served as Chief Healthcare Officer (CHO) of GEMS from 2015 to 2024. In this capacity, she led key initiatives in managed care services, clinical risk
and medicine management, healthcare networks, provider relations, tariff negotiations, and strategic healthcare purchasing. Dr Gqola also contributes to the broader healthcare industry by serving on the Board of Health Quality Assessment (HQA), a not-for-profit organization that conducts annual assessments of
quality in healthcare by medical schemes, with the aim of assisting medical schemes to improve the quality of care received by members.

Mr Heinrich Nashenda
Heinrich Nashenda is currently a trustee of the Gemhealth Medical Aid Scheme. The Gemhealth Medical Aid Scheme is a closed fund serving the employees of the Namdeb Holdings Group(Namdeb Holdings) and Namibia Diamond Trading Company (NDTC). Namdeb Holdings and NDTC are joint venture partnerships between De Beers and the government of the Republic of Namibia. Heinrich has been a trustee of Gemhealth since April 2016 and served as Chairperson from April 2017 until March 2024. He is a trained risk management professional having worked for PwC as a Governance Risk and Compliance Specialist for seven years before joining Debmarine Namibia as a Management Accountant and latertransitioned into the position of Business Planning Manager. Heinrich holds an Honours B. Comm degree in Management Accounting from the University of Stellenbosch and qualified as a Certified Internal Auditor in 2002.
Heinrich currently serves as country representative to the Board of Health Funders (BHF). He served as a director on the Namibia Financial Institutions Supervisory Authority (NAMFISA) from Jan 2010 until Oct 2013. He currently serves as a committee member of The Namibian Association of Medical
Aid Funds (NAMAF)’s Affordability Committee (AffCom), that is mandated to consider all matters relating to affordability and accessibility. The AffCom is comprised of experts in the private healthcare funding industry and corporate risk management. Heinrich has a special interest in Universal Healthcare and recently completed a Certificate in Health Economics and Policy with the London School of Economics and Political Science. He intends through his strong collaborative leadership style, along with his extensive medical aid funding industry experience, coupled with his commercial, financial and management accounting exposure to make meaningful contributions towards the effective introduction of Universal Healthcare Coverage in Namibia, which the Ministry
of Health and Social Services (MOHSS) intends to roll out through the Essential Health Package.

Ms Michelle Beneke
Michelle Beneke BA LLB (Wits) is an admitted attorney with 26 years’ post-articles experience in corporate and commercial law. She has a strong in-house commercial background; having occupied legal and business roles (Medscheme, Barloworld, Barloworld Logistics). She has been in practice (Greyling Orchard Attorneys, Cowan Harper Attorneys, Beneke Gantley Inc, and Michelle Beneke Attorneys Inc) and has been a management consultant (Letsema Consulting (Pty) Ltd) with extensive private and public sector experience. In the healthcare industry, she has advised a number of medical schemes in terms of legal and governance issues, has chaired scheme Remuneration Committees and Nomination Committees, has been involved in scheme dispute resolution involving trustees and members, and has been a member of a scheme Disputes Committee. Michelle is the company secretary of the BHF

Ms Neo Khauoe
An accomplished multi-skilled individual with more than 30 years of managerial experience in the medical and medical scheme environment which includes serving as Principal Officer of Polmed and Sizwe Medical Fund, General Manager, Scheme Executive, Client Relationship Manager and Provider Relations manager.
The experience referred to has richly contributed to acquiring high-level management, administrative, strategic, organisational, stakeholder liaison, networking, decision making, diplomacy, protocol and communication skills with a high emphasis placed on governance and compliance.
She was instrumental in managing the Administration and Managed Care contract at Metropolitan Health, which contributed to POLMED’s success as reported in the media by independent companies such as Alexander Forbes.
In 2014, she spearheaded the takeover of the strategic management of Sizwe Medical Fund out of curatorship. Thanks to her proven track record of good governance, ensuring effective and efficient functioning organizations, member participation and stakeholder management, when she left the scheme was stable with a good financial outlook.
Her current role is that of Principal Officer to POLMED. Good results can be observed since she has taken the helm at Polmed. Employee satisfaction, member voice, scheme sustainability and stakeholder relations has been her key focus.

Ms Phindile Mabaso
Phindile is an Admitted Attorney with a practical approach to the legal challenges that shape industries. With an LLB and an LLM specializing in Insolvency Law from the University of Pretoria, she brings a strong blend of legal expertise and a corporate mindset to every aspect of her work. Currently serving as an Associate at KHR Inc., Phindile manages the firm’s recovery litigation portfolio, handling complex liquidation and business rescue matters for corporate clients in distress.
Her expertise spans regulatory and compliance laws, particularly focusing on Compliance, Governance, and Risk Management. At KHR, she collaborates with different business consultancy entities, ensuring real-world applications of compliance requirements and governance best practices across diverse enterprises. With a steady hand, she guides businesses to remain well-regulated and resilient, always with a focus on protecting both the company and its community stakeholders.

Prof JL Arthur Rantloane is Emeritus Professor of Anaesthesiology at university of Pretoria, and former HoD of anaesthesiology at university of Pretoria and MEDUNSA (Medical university of Southern Africa). He was previously deputy dean at the Faculty of Health Sciences, university of Pretoria. His past professional appointments include:
President of the College of Anaesthetists (Colleges of Medicine of South Africa); president of the South African Society of Anaesthesiologists (SASA); president of the Africa Regional Section (ARS) of the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists; honorary registrar and examinations committee chairperson of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa.
