Michelle Beneke

Michelle Beneke BA LLB (Wits) is an admitted attorney with 27 years’ post-admission experience in corporate and commercial law. She has been a legal advisor and a fund manager in the healthcare funding industry, with a specific interest in healthcare fraud, waste, and abuse. She subsequently headed up the governance, compliance, legal, risk, and sustainability function in a division of a listed entity which involved multiple cross-border transactions. After leaving corporate, she returned to private practice and then was asked by a client to join their management consultancy. She acted as a management consultant operating predominantly in the public sector and advising primarily on Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment, procurement, and legal policy issues. After moving back to private practice, she continued to do work in the public sector and was engaged to review a corporate transaction by a large public investment entity, at which time she identified potential fraud which was subsequently uncovered during a forensic investigation. She returned to private practice in 2018 and currently practices in Cape Town in the corporate and commercial space. As such, she has provided a number of medical schemes both in terms of assisting them with their corporate governance arrangements, training Boards of Trustees in the SADC region. In addition, she advises medical schemes in South Africa on regulatory issues and other matters pertaining to the business of a medical schemes. Michelle is the company secretary of the BHF and speaks regularly at various BHF forums including FWA Indabas and the Governance Workshop at the BHF Conference.
